Salt Fest
September, 2020
In September the town held a COVID safe festival on a smaller scale. It was wonderful to see customers again. Masks and social distancing were in place. Numbers were limited with stewards on duty to keep an eye on all entrances. Picnic tables were adorned with wipe and disinfectant for the public to use.
It was a great weekend and very successful.
St. Richard's Hospice HeART Appeal
October, 2019
In October I was invited to take part in the 'Hospice Heart Exhibition' hosted by and raising funds for St. Richard's Hospice. It was a brilliant and well presented exhibition which included pieces by Theresa May, Brian Cox and Phil Tufnell along with other artists. The works were displayed and auctioned off for charity in the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works.
Well done to everyone involved!
Wychavon Community Awards
March, 2019
I am AMAZED and honoured to have received the Wychavon Community Recognition Award for the Arts. Thank you to Peter Hawkins who nominated me, everyone at the Droitwich Arts Network, my friends at the Salvation Army, my family and friends and customers for all the support and encouragement you have given me over the years.
A special thank you to my Mum and Dad who have been there from the beginning and always believed in me.
I love my town and it's great I can support it through art.
ArtsFest 2018
June, 2018
This year's ArtsFest was a great success. Not only did we have beautiful weather but the variety of events on offer encouraged great participation from both DAN members and the general public. I particularly enjoyed running the two sketching walks with fellow artist Peter Hawkins and trying out something new in the form of the Mime and Improvisation workshop!
Special thanks must go to Rhys Jones for the tremendous hard work he put into organising and running the festival. Thank you also to those Droitwich Arts Network members who helped in anyway.
I Got Married!
June, 2018
On 23rd June, I married Charles Gallery (yes, the perfect name for an artist I know)! Although I have changed my name, I will remain Rosie Philpott for the business.
Wonky Droitwich Returns!
May, 2018
Rosie Philpott first burst onto the local art scene in 2012 with her ‘Wonky Droitwich’ painting, depicting Droitwich Spa’s High Street in a quirky style. Since then the original and a limited number of 250 prints have completely sold out and fans of Rosie’s work have been requesting another version!
The new painting, “Wonky Droitwich 1938” sets the familiar view of the wobbly High Street in the year 1938, bringing a vintage twist to the original.
Rosie explains “I had great fun using our local library to research the shops and owners along the street in 1938 and was surprised by the number of butchers and grocers that existed. I even discovered what a ‘grindery’ and ‘fancy repository’ are. I knew I had to change the painting from the original but keep the same feel, and, as a lover of all things vintage and retro, this seemed the perfect choice”.
Rosie adds, “The famous ‘boy on the bike’ remains but in a slightly different form and I hope my customers enjoy this little nod to the original”.
It has been a very productive first half of the year with two more paintings making their debut: “Lazy Sunday at the Lido Park” depicting a summery scene Droitwich’s popular Lido Park and “Open Day at the Chateau” inspired by last year’s picnic, again with a vintage twist.
The originals, just completed, have already sold. However, Rosie will be selling limited-edition prints of her new paintings in sizes A3 and A2.
“I hope this makes up for those that missed out on the opportunity to own their own “Wonky Droitwich” and I look forward to seeing people’s reaction to all of my new paintings”.
Salt King 200
June, 2017
Salt King 200 was a great success!
Attracting approximately 2000 guests, John Corbett's 200th birthday celebration picnic in the grounds of the Chateau Impney was certainly an event to behold.
When the rain poured down at 11am that morning, many of us wondered what we had done. But the British spirit didn't fail us! The sun came out and hoards of people could be seen walking towards us laden with deckchairs, picnic hampers and outdoor games. The picnic was full of fun, laughter and a wonderful sense of community spirit.
Community groups manned information stalls, put on activities and competitions and those such as Voices Unlimited and the Salvation Army band, added to the atmosphere with music.
The birthday boy himself welcomed guests and shared a scrumptious birthday cake, in the shape of a picnic basket, with us all.
History was repeated with the local town folk coming together, all ages, all backgrounds, enjoying the British summer in the name of someone who has done so much for Droitwich Spa.
Droitwich Arts Network Exhibition, Hanbury Hall
October, 2016
What a fantastic Droitwich Arts Network Exhibition at Hanbury Hall! I had a great time helping to set up, posing for the 'paint a portrait' photo and celebrating everyone's achievements. It turned out to be our most successful exhibition with over 1000 visitors and many purchases of paintings and cards. I felt proud to be involved.
Official Opening of the new Droitwich Spa Salvation Army Building
March, 2015
As you may know by now, the Salvation Army is my church and I am always involved in their events. We have recently had an extension and refurbishment of our building so we are more able to meet the needs of the community. The Territorial Commander (Leader of the SA in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland) Commissioner Clive and his wife Commissioner Marianne Adams opened the buildings for us. I was commissioned to create an original painting for the new Cafe on the theme of 'the feeding of the 5000' and to create a stylised portrait of the couple as their thank you gift.
Please see the images above which show the moment they open their gift and their reaction. Clive Adams is well known for taking selfies which is why I painted him as if he were taking one. He loved it so much that he immediately took a selfie of the three of us during the service!
It was a wonderful day that I will always remember. It great to see how much people liked my modern interpretation of the well- known Bible story too.
'Nice Things' Gallery Open Evening
September, 2014
I had a lovely evening at 'Nice Things' showing my work alongside two other Artists. It was great to see so many people there and it was lots of fun! Thank you so much to Hilary Kemp for organising it and being so supportive. Remember you can still visit the gallery. For more information please visit the gallery website.
Mural for St. Peter's First School
May, 2014
My old Primary School, St. Peter's CEVA First School, commissioned me to produce a mural to hang in their hall using their motto "We Care, We Share, We tell the Truth". My design shows the children holding up the words, starting at the school and leading to St. Peter's Church which is just down the road. The school is connected with this Church and the children often make the short walk to services, as indeed I did during my time there! The mural is full of subtle Christian symbols such as the cross, a candle and the Bible. I am told that the children love the mural.
Artist in Residence: Sytchampton First School
June, 2014
I was invited into this lovely first school to work with all years of children from Reception, Year 1 and 2 and through to Year 3 and 4. The children had been looking at Artists such as Lowery and Van Gogh the previous week so as a continuation of this I showed the youngest children how to paint beautiful summer meadows and sunflowers, linking in with Van Gogh's famous sunflower picture and his use of vivid colours. I taught them an easy technique using wax crayons and watercolour wash and considering they were in Reception, I was thrilled with the results. Their work is show on the gallery to the right.
I worked on 'Stylised Portraits' with the rest of the school, showing them how to capture Thermoses in a cartoony style and encouraging them to think about their interests and hobbies. Again, I was really pleased with the results.
The week ended with a special assembly where parents were invited to attend and view the children's work which is now displayed in the main hall.
Thank you to Sytchampton for inviting me.
Artist in Residence: St. Peter's First School
March - April, 2014
This week I have really enjoyed working as Artist in Residence at 'St. Peters First School' in Droitwich Spa. I worked together with the children to create a strain glass window on perspex that will be displayed in the entrance of the school. The children were asked to submit designs and the best two from every class were chosen - these talented children were presented with one of my bookmarks last week during an assembly.
I then gathered together all the winners' designs and combined them into one image. The theme was 'Saint Peter' which his keys to Heaven. I used all of the ideas that the children had been learning about: the keys, a fisherman, fishing nets, the cross, the sea and St. Peter himself. I have really enjoyed working with some of the children this week who have helped me to paint the window. I have also enjoyed the many visits I have received from enthusiastic pupils.
The final design has been photocopied in an A4 size for all of the children to take home and colour so they can create their own. The window will be put up shortly so please feel free to come and see it.
West Malvern Arts Festival
August, 2013
The Festival was a great opportunity to promote my work in Malvern and see how the local residents reacted to my 'quirky style', especially to my depiction of the Malvern Hills and St. Ann's Well. The response from visitors was overwhelmingly positive. It was the first time I had exhibited as a professional artist beside other professionals. It was lovely to meet these people and see the variety of styles displayed. My work was among some more traditional paintings which were brilliant in their own right but it was lovely to see how the public both loved these and my quirky style. Their surprise at turning around and seeing my work was at times amusing. I would like to thank the organisers for a brilliant three days.
My Shed Studio!
June, 2013
I have now moved into my new Studio in the garden which is absolutely fantastic. Previously, I was cooped up in my room with paints everywhere and frames taking over the house. Now I have a brilliant space to work with excellent light and a lovely place to meet customers. It took my family and I a long time to paint and 'do up' and I am so thankful for their help in making this happen. Take a look at the photos above if you are interested to see my new working space or just want to be nosey!
'Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution'
August, 2012
Paul Martin (Presenter of 'Flog it') was filming his new series 'Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution' at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre. People were welcome to come and bring their crafts to show off. As soon as I arrived he saw me from afar and beckoned me over. He absolutely loved my paintings, including "Wonky Droitwich", and said we must get it on camera. I ended up spending 25 minutes being interviewed and will hopefully be on the program around October time.
Jubilee
June, 2012
Many events took place in Droitwich Spa during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The 'Droitwich Arts Network' organised the event 'Droitwich Diamonds' where 60 pieces of artwork were displayed in 60 shops throughout the town. I exhibited a print of "Wonky Droitwich" in 'Boots Opticians' which again created a lot of interest. I also had a stall in the Craft Marquee on the Saturday and had a very successful day, selling my second original "Salt Day". Again, limited edition prints out of 250 are available to purchase.
St. Peter's First School
March, 2012
I am the Artist in Residence at St. Peter's Primary School in Droitwich Spa and have recently been involved in their 'Arts Week', working with children from all year groups to create 'Superhero Olympic Athletes' in watercolour and pen. The children all thoroughly enjoyed it and really got into using their imagination, having lots of fun with their super powers as well as learning the basics of watercolour and drawing.
The Salvation Army
February, 2012
I held my first art exhibition since graduating in February at the Salvation Army in Droitwich Spa. The admission and 10% of all items sold went towards the Building Fund. My large painting of Droitwich Spa High Street created a lot of interest. The evening made £131 for the Building Fund!
